British Wildlife on the Endangered List

A third of our mammals are now endangered – but some could be wiped out completely

By David Derbyshire of the Daily Mail

A third of Britain’s mammals are in ‘serious decline’, a disturbing report shows. The hedgehog, mountain hare and dormouse are among those under threat, it says.

The industrialisation of the countryside, the rise of invasive predators and modern farming techniques are to blame for dramatic falls in around 40 species.

Although hedgehogs remain a relatively common sight in gardens across the UK, their numbers have fallen by a fifth since the early 1970s, the report says.
