Battle Proms – Althorp Park – 13th August 2011(4.30pm)

Battle Proms – Althorp Park

On 13th August 2011, the Battle Proms will be taking place at Althorp Park, Northamptonshire. The event looks fantastic, and I thought that it might be appropriate to put it up on our village website.

The program

4.30pm Gates Open

Before the afternoon’s entertainment begins there’s time to unpack the picnic hampers and take in all the sights and sounds. Win a prize at the traditional fairground stalls, visit the Napoleonic re-enactors at their encampment, and get in the party spirit as the warm-up jazz act take to the stage.

6.45pm Napoleonic Cavalry and Infantry displays

There’s a thundering of hooves as the mounted cavalry invite you to discover the colour and chivalry of this historic era, demonstrating battlefield skill-at-arms with lances, rifles and superb horsemanship.

7.25pm Evening gun salute

The gunners of the English Field Artillery Company herald the commencement of the evening’s musical programme with a volley of shots from an authentic vintage field gun, answered by infantry musket fire.

New English Concert Orchestra
Conductor: Douglas Coombes
Soprano: Denise Leigh
Host: Popular BBC presenter Pam Rhodes
French Horn Soloist: Alex Hamilton

In true Battle Proms style, the evening continues with a wealth of soul-stirring favourites performed by the New English Concert Orchestra, joined by our superb soprano soloist Denise Leigh for an enchanting selection of songs and arias. Classic follows classic in a carefully selected programme of orchestral music at its very best.

It’s the perfect opening to a spectacular summer concert, and there’s never a dry eye in the house as the historic and unmistakeable sound of the Spitfire engine rumbles overhead in a meticulously choreographed aerial display to Holst’s Jupiter.

Naturally, the programme would not be complete without Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture with live cannon fire, and of course the signature piece which gives this special event its name: Beethoven’s ‘Battle Symphony, a work which was originally composed to include the firing of 193 cannon as part of the score.

The unrivalled Battle Proms is the only concert in the world to rise dramatically to this challenge using live cannon with real black powder explosions, each fired electronically according to the original score by the orchestra’s percussionist. Add to this a sky lit with precisely and expertly launched fireworks, and you truly have a spectacle of unforgettable dramatic impact.

Be swept along with the infectious enthusiasm of the crowd for the traditional sing-alongflag-waving proms finale, including favourites Jerusalem, Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory, culminating in a dazzling firework spectacular!

The Battle Proms is the summer concert of the season – stunning music, glorious settings and breathtaking displays – an incomparable summer concert experience that you will never forget.

In beautiful parkland, with views over the Althorp Estate and House, the Battle Proms Northamptonshire summer concert could not have a better location.

Enjoy your summer’s evening concert of stirring classical music, cavalry and airborne displays with a picnic as the sun goes down.  A most memorable summer concert, finishing with an amazing fireworks display, with the impressive 500 year old mansion as a backdrop.
