Christmas/New Year Rubbish collections

Bin Update

11:20am, Thursday 23 December 2010

Refuse collections cancelled on Friday 24 December

Due to the continuing severe weather conditions, wheeled bins and recycling boxes will not be collected in South Northamptonshire on Friday 24 December.

Refuse crews have been unable to collect waste in the district at all this week. Weather forecasts indicate that conditions should improve and we hope to resume a normal service from Wednesday 29 December.

Black bins will be prioritised. Collections will be as follows:

Date of cancelled collection
Your next collection
What you should put out
Monday 20 December Monday 3 January
(bank holiday)
Black wheeled bin
Recycling as per calendar
Tuesday 21 December Tuesday 4 January Black wheeled bin
Recycling as per calendar
Wednesday 22 December Wednesday 29 December Black wheeled bin
Recycling as per calendar
Thursday 23 December Thursday 30 December Black wheeled bin
Recycling as per calendar
Friday 24 December Friday 31 December Black wheeled bin
Recycling as per calendar

We will collect additional material that is left next to the wheeled bins in black sacks.

If green bins are left out, this waste will be sent to landfill, rather than recycled. This is an unusual situation in view of the extreme weather conditions and will allow us to return services to normal as soon as possible. South Northamptonshire has an exceptional recycling rate, thanks to residents’ efforts, and this is an unfortunate and isolated situation.

If residents want to ensure that green bin waste is recycled, please do not put green bins out week commencing 27 December.

Recycling boxes should be put out as per the collection calendar. Material in boxes will be sent for recycling in the usual way.

Services returning to normal as soon as possible

Due to the forthcoming bank holidays, there is limited scope to re-plan collections and we apologise for any inconvenience caused to residents. South Northamptonshire is a very rural district and although main roads are passable, the majority of village roads are not.

The safety of the public and our crew members is our main consideration. Our refuse collection vehicles are up to 32 tonnes in weight and could cause significant damage if they were to slide on slippery roads. We also need to consider the state of the footpaths and ability of the crews to move wheeled bins safely.

We want to assure residents that we are doing everything we can to return to a normal service as soon as possible and thank them for their patience.

Any further changes to the collection schedule will be updated at www.southnorthants.gov.uk
